The Saulkrasti bypass is one of the largest projects in Latvia's history. It’s a part of the Via Baltica (E67) motorway linking Warsaw and Tallinn.
The total funding for the bypass amounted to €113,006,726. The total length of the project is 20.2 km. The project includes 17 different traffic structures, including 7 two-level overpasses with lighting, 6 new bridges, 2 pedestrian tunnels, 2 railway bridges and 13 km of access roads. All structures, except the railway bridges, were designed by the Bridge department of "Ceļuprojekts". Noise barriers, seal fences and metal mesh fences have also been constructed and spruce hedges have been introduced.
In addition to the Saulkrasti bypass, part of the existing A1 road was also reconstructed during the project. This 14.8 km stretch of road includes 15 bridges and overpasses, four level crossings, pedestrian and cycle paths, complex crossing lighting, street lighting, fences, noise barriers and bus stops.
The design was completed in 2004 and the Saulkrasti bypass was officially opened on 27 September 2007. The project took almost 17 years to develop, as the construction of the road was already being considered in the early 1990s and the project was in its early stages.
The project was awarded 1st prize in the contest "Best Structure of the Year 2007 in Latvia" in the category "Engineering Structure".
